Academic Colloquia

As part of its mission to produce responsible scholarship, the Text & Canon Institute hosts academic colloquia that bring together top scholars in their fields to present on key aspects of the Bible’s textual history, canonical formation, and translation. The end result is a published volume of papers that advances our knowledge of the Bible’s history and formation.

Our inaugural colloquium was held in Phoenix and examined the philological work of Origen of Alexandria. The papers were recently published as The Forerunners and Heirs of Origen’s Hexapla (V&R). Our second colloquium was held at Yarnton Manor in Oxfordshire and addressed the question of text types in New Testament textual criticism. The papers for that conference are currently being edited for publication.

Origen as Philologist

Origen of Alexandria is renowned his work on the Hexapla, his six-parallel-columned edition of the Old Testament that has shaped the Bible for centuries. For its inaugural colloquium, the Text & Canon Institute convened an interdisciplinary group of scholars to explore his textual scholarship and its reception in late antiquity.

Text Types in NT Textual Criticism

Held at Yarnton Manor, the Text & Canon Institute’s second colloquium brought together textual scholars from around the globe to take stock of the current debate about New Testament manuscript groupings known as text types. They presented fresh avenues of understanding and discussed the implications for New Testament studies.

The Forerunners and Heirs of Origen’s Hexapla: The Proceedings of the Inaugural Colloquium of the Text & Canon Institute

John D. Meade (ed.)

Although Origen and his Hexapla are well known among biblical scholars, questions about his philology, particularly textual criticism, persist. The Hexapla contained very important texts and translations of the Hebrew Scriptures, but unfortunately it was probably destroyed in the seventh century and we possess only fragments of it. This volume systematically treats the questions of Origen’s forerunners and heirs and attempts to reconstruct how Origen developed the philological method he received and also how his followers received and innovated his textual work.

Thanks to a generous supporter, we are pleased to be able to make this volume available open access.

It’s very encouraging to see some of the interests and passions I’ve had about the canon, the history of the text, and the reliability of Scripture being pursued so avidly. —Peter J. Gentry
